APPLICATION

When logistics becomes part of designing the building

Bungalows, lodges, tourist accommodation, staff housing and site buildings can be engineered in LSF where manufacturing, transport, erection and maintenance have to be organised far from the factory or from major urban centres.

Group of small accommodation units set on a wooded sloping site.

CHOOSING THE LEVEL OF PREFABRICATION

The road, the local resources and the building decide together

Criterion-by-criterion comparison of what Structure Kit and Panel Kit imply for transport, local assembly, handling, the local team and storage.
CriterionStructure KitPanel Kit
TransportSections grouped by panel, for a more compact load.Pre-assembled panels and trusses, with a greater transported volume.
Local assemblyMore assembly of sections and panels on site.Less local structural assembly before erection.
HandlingComponents handled progressively according to the organisation of the site.Handling and lifting equipment suited to the size of the panels.
Local teamSkills required to assemble, inspect and erect the components.Team focused more on receiving, lifting and erecting.
StorageOrganisation of the packs and of the assembly area to be planned.Protection, delivery order and storage of the panels to be planned.

A project may combine Structure Kit and Panel Kit by building, by phase or according to transport constraints. The choice is not made from distance alone.

Climate and maintenance become operational data

On a remote site, the availability of maintenance resources and exposure to wind, dust, rain or salt can weigh as much as the frame. Roof, façades, ventilation, solar shading, air and water tightness and protection of the materials must be defined for the actual location.

  • how do the components reach the site?
  • where are they unloaded, protected and stored?
  • who assembles, inspects and erects the frame?
  • what equipment and consumables are available locally?
  • how will the envelope and the building services be maintained?

NEED A STARTING POINT?

Designs to adapt to the place and the brief

These models are adaptable concept designs for clients who do not yet have plans of their own.

PREPARING THE STUDY

Describe the site as much as the building

Send the precise location, the brief, the drawings, the number of units, the road or port access available, the transport limits, the lifting equipment, the storage capacity, the local workforce, the climatic conditions, the self-sufficiency required and the level of prefabrication envisaged.

Let’s study the building, its logistics and the resources available locally together.
