Holiday houses and chalets

Holiday house with an upper storey under a pitched roof

This design develops a longitudinal volume over two levels, with the upper floor set within a pitched roof. This geometry may allow trusses, frames or certain panel grids to be repeated, but the openings formed in the roof slopes interrupt that regularity.

The roof here is a major part of the architectural expression and of the envelope. It must be studied together with the structure of the upper floor, not added once the rooms have been arranged.

What this design shows

The windows set into the roof slopes create interruptions in the rafters, trusses or load-bearing frames. The loads must pass around each opening by means of coordinated edges, lintels and connections. Repetition of the roof components is therefore possible only in the bays that keep an identical geometry.

The connections around these windows are particularly exposed to water. The upstands, flashings, outlets and continuity of the water management layer must be defined with the joinery actually chosen.

The volume is completed by lower parts and by a terrace. The junction between a pitched roof and a low-pitched volume or a terrace creates differences of level, upstands and run-off that must be resolved before work starts on site.

The pale cladding shown may visually continue from the facade onto the roof, but the two areas do not face the same actions. Supports, fixings, ventilation and laps are adapted to their pitch and their exposure.

Layout

Layout shown in axonometric

The layout of this design is read from schematic axonometrics. They constitute neither construction drawings, nor structural drawings, nor a building permit.

Possible adaptations and their technical implications

The length of the volume can be changed bay by bay. To keep an industrial benefit, it is preferable to maintain a few recurring spacings and opening dimensions rather than make every part of the roof different.

Moving a rooflight or increasing its width changes the components interrupted and the load paths. Turning part of the upper floor into a double-height void likewise changes the supports, the floor diaphragm and the stability of the tall walls.

In a development of several units, certain trusses, facades and junctions can be repeated. The end buildings and those with a different orientation remain subject to specific wind actions and envelope details.

A design becomes a project only after study

Site and geotechnics, planning, orientation, climate, structure, foundations, loads, wind, seismic action, envelope, performance, services, regulations and contractual scope are defined for the real case. None of these points is guaranteed by the original documents.
