Holiday houses and chalets

Contemporary chalet with dark cladding

This design stacks several offset volumes, with an upper floor partly projecting beyond the level below and large glazed areas. This composition allows different orientations within a grouped siting, but it creates load transfers, soffits and envelope connections more complex than those of a chalet formed from a single volume.

The dark cladding belongs to the architectural expression. It determines neither the structure nor, by itself, the performance of the wall.

What this design shows

The upper volumes do not have a direct support beneath them everywhere. The floors must transfer their loads towards the walls and cross walls that actually bear, while limiting deflection and vibration in the overhanging parts. Depending on the spans and the openings, the answer may use reinforced LSF components or a localised hybrid solution.

The large windows, particularly where they approach the corners, reduce the panels available for bracing. The lintels, edge studs, connections and anchors must be organised at the scale of the complete building.

The terraces and setbacks of the upper floor produce several exposed floor edges. The soffits must protect the structure and maintain thermal continuity with the adjacent walls. The thresholds, upstands and outlets prevent water from reaching the load-bearing components.

A dark facing can reach higher surface temperatures under strong solar exposure. The choice of material, of any ventilated cavity, of its fixings and of its movement joints must therefore suit the real climate.

Possible adaptations and their technical implications

The volumes can be moved, reduced or oriented differently, but these operations change the supports, the cantilevers and the surfaces exposed to wind. Rotating the building on the site may also change the dominant facades, the solar gains and the shading requirements.

In a grouped siting, certain grids and certain panels can be repeated. Orientation variants are not, however, automatically identical: wind pressure, open facades and terrace details may differ.

For seasonal occupation, the ventilation, the management of humidity and the protection of the services during periods without use must be defined according to the location. These subjects belong to the equipped building, not to the frame alone.

A design becomes a project only after study

Site and geotechnics, planning, orientation, climate, structure, foundations, loads, wind, seismic action, envelope, performance, services, regulations and contractual scope are defined for the real case. None of these points is guaranteed by the original documents.
