Holiday houses and chalets

Single-storey holiday house with a covered terrace

This design combines a single-storey rectangular volume under a pitched roof with a covered terrace extending one of the facades. The regularity of the building may favour the repetition of panels and trusses, but the large openings and the extension of the roof must be built into the study from the outset.

The covered terrace is not merely an external amenity: its roof, its supports and its anchors are among the works subject to wind and water.

What this design shows

The main roof has a continuous geometry that can be broken down into repeated trusses or frames. The ends, the gables, the large windows and the junction with the canopy nevertheless create particular zones whose forces and connections differ.

The longitudinal facades include several full-height windows. These openings reduce the length of wall available for bracing. The solid panels, the cross walls and the anchors must be distributed so as to stabilise the building in both directions.

The covered terrace may be carried by independent posts or connected to the main structure. In either case, wind uplift, drainage and differential movement between the supports must be verified. The posts must not rest on an external surface with no foundation.

The continuity of the insulation and of the air control concerns the habitable volume. The external terrace remains outside that envelope, even where its roof appears to continue that of the house.

Layout

Schematic plans

These documents are there to make the layout and the envelope shown understandable. They are schematic plans: they constitute neither construction drawings, nor structural drawings, nor a building permit.

Possible adaptations and their technical implications

The terrace can change depth, side or means of support. Increasing its span changes the beams, the posts, the foundations and the uplift forces. Moving it also changes the direction of drainage and the connections with the facades.

The internal layout can change more freely than in a design with an upper floor, but the cross walls useful to the roof or to the bracing must not be removed without a replacement solution.

In a repetitive development, the same structural core can receive several terrace or facade positions. Each variant must nevertheless be identified and prepared separately, so that the fixings and edge components match the right siting.

A design becomes a project only after study

Site and geotechnics, planning, orientation, climate, structure, foundations, loads, wind, seismic action, envelope, performance, services, regulations and contractual scope are defined for the real case. None of these points is guaranteed by the original documents.
