Two-storey villa integrated into a sloping site

This design uses a difference in ground level to arrange two storeys in relation to the slope. The interest of this configuration lies in the way the building adapts to the site, but its feasibility depends directly on the geotechnics, the earthworks, the drainage and the works retaining the soil.

What this design shows

A lower part may end up close to the natural ground or against a filled area. The LSF structure is not a retaining wall and must not be placed in direct contact with the soil. Earth pressure and water must be resisted by a separate retaining structure, for example in concrete or masonry, with correctly designed waterproofing, drainage and connections.

The bearing levels and the anchors must be coordinated with the real geometry of the foundations. Simply transposing the design onto another slope is therefore not possible without revisiting the siting and the studies.

Layout

Schematic plans

These documents are there to make the layout and the envelope shown understandable. They are schematic plans: they constitute neither construction drawings, nor structural drawings, nor a building permit.

Possible adaptations and their technical implications

Changing the position of the lower level, creating an additional entrance or moving the large openings affects the earthworks, the retaining works, the foundations and the bracing. The relationship between the floors and the different ground levels must remain legible in the load path.

Exposed facades and the parts close to the ground do not face the same water and ventilation constraints. The envelope build-ups, the base courses, the upstands and the drainage are therefore adapted to each face of the building rather than repeated as a uniform solution.

A design becomes a project only after study

Site and geotechnics, planning, orientation, climate, structure, foundations, loads, wind, seismic action, envelope, performance, services, regulations and contractual scope are defined for the real case. None of these points is guaranteed by the original documents.
