Contemporary villas

Contemporary villa with a cantilevered volume

This design is organised around an offset upper floor that forms an overhang above part of the ground floor. This architectural expression calls for a precise reading of the supports, the load transfers and the permissible deflections.

What this design shows

The cantilever and the large glazed areas, particularly where they approach a corner, limit the vertical supports and the bracing panels available. The floor has to carry the loads, provide the stiffness of the overhang and transfer the forces towards the walls and foundations that actually bear them.

Depending on the spans, the openings and the loads, the answer may remain in reinforced light steel or locally incorporate a hybrid solution. That choice belongs to the calculation; it cannot be inferred from the architectural rendering alone.

Layout

Schematic plans

These documents are there to make the layout and the envelope shown understandable. They are schematic plans: they constitute neither construction drawings, nor structural drawings, nor a building permit.

Possible adaptations and their technical implications

Reducing, increasing or moving the overhang changes the forces, the deflection and the vibration of the floor. Closing part of a glazed area may free a wall useful to stability; widening an opening may, conversely, call for new reinforcement and a redistribution of the forces.

The garage, the stair opening, the wet rooms and the services passing through the floor must be coordinated before manufacture. The openings and reinforcement are prepared from a stabilised version of the project, so as to avoid improvised cuts in structural components.

A design becomes a project only after study

Site and geotechnics, planning, orientation, climate, structure, foundations, loads, wind, seismic action, envelope, performance, services, regulations and contractual scope are defined for the real case. None of these points is guaranteed by the original documents.
