Longitudinal villa on a sloping site

This design develops an elongated building over two storeys. Its longitudinal grid may allow certain panel, floor and opening principles to be repeated, provided that repetition is built into the study from the outset.

What this design shows

A regular geometry can simplify the preparation and identification of the components. It does not, however, produce an identical structure along the whole length: the openings, the garage, the stair, the ends, and the effects of wind and seismic action create zones whose forces and bracing needs differ.

On a sloping site, the bearing levels and the foundations may also vary. Industrial repetition then applies to the compatible components, without concealing the adaptations the site requires.

Layout

Schematic plans

These documents are there to make the layout and the envelope shown understandable. They are schematic plans: they constitute neither construction drawings, nor structural drawings, nor a building permit.

Possible adaptations and their technical implications

The length, the layout and the rhythm of the openings can change. To keep the benefit of repetition, it helps to group certain panel, window and grid dimensions rather than make every facade entirely different.

Moving the stair, the garage or the wet rooms changes the floor openings, the reinforcement and the routing of the services. Changing the cladding or the facade also changes the supports, the fixings, any ventilation and the edge details; it must be built into the complete composition of the envelope.

A design becomes a project only after study

Site and geotechnics, planning, orientation, climate, structure, foundations, loads, wind, seismic action, envelope, performance, services, regulations and contractual scope are defined for the real case. None of these points is guaranteed by the original documents.
