Two-storey villa on a rocky site

This design shows a two-storey villa associated with a rocky site and with partially offset volumes. The rendering expresses an intention for siting; it demonstrates neither the bearing capacity of the ground nor the feasibility of a direct support on the rock shown.

What this design shows

The offsets between the volumes and the overhanging areas make it necessary to identify clearly the supports and the continuity of the loads down to the foundations. The floors must be verified for strength, deflection and vibration, particularly where the facades of the lower level contain wide openings.

Depending on the final geometry, the structure may use reinforced LSF components or a localised hybrid solution. The decision depends on the spans, the loads, the stability and the real bearing conditions.

Layout

Schematic plans

These documents are there to make the layout and the envelope shown understandable. They are schematic plans: they constitute neither construction drawings, nor structural drawings, nor a building permit.

Possible adaptations and their technical implications

The siting must be revisited on the basis of a geotechnical study and a site survey. Moving the building, modifying its cantilevers or changing the position of the entrances may transform the foundation system and reveal a need for retaining works or drainage.

The large windows, the floor openings, the roof connections and the vertical services must be settled before the components are prepared. A late change to these points never concerns the internal fit-out alone: it can affect the floor, the load-bearing panels and the connections.

A design becomes a project only after study

Site and geotechnics, planning, orientation, climate, structure, foundations, loads, wind, seismic action, envelope, performance, services, regulations and contractual scope are defined for the real case. None of these points is guaranteed by the original documents.
